Paris Sightseeing 1 Day Tour

This is an example of a one day sightseeing tour of Paris that I did for clients.

Paris sights

We can buy a one day tourist travel pass for all rail, metro & bus services.

Start at Montmarte, Metro Anvers and take finiculaire up the hill to Sacre Coeur. Wonderful views. Walk around with the church on your right to the Place de Têtre. There is a bus to take you back down.

Next go to the Gare de St. Lazare, and see the vestibule of the Hotel Concord next to it. 1889 in Chinoise style, mirrored ceiling. Amazing!

Short walk to Galleries Lafayette, go into the central perfumerie dept. and look up at the dome. Breathtaking! Short walk around the Opera House, down to Madeleine, large church, and around the corner visit Fauchon, the most famous delicatessen. Down to Place de la Concord for views of the Louvre and up to Arc de Triomph and beyond La Defense.

Metro to Strasbourg St Denis, Lunch in the really wonderful bistro - Julien. Restored 1890's Belle Epoque interior. Cassoulet D'Oie and their profiteroles stuffed with ice cream covered in hot chocolate sauce poured at your table from an original coffee pot are their specialities and just to die for!!

Metro to Champ de Mars on south bank, Up the Eifel Tower. Go to the 2nd floor only, not worth going to the very top, too high to see detail and can be a long wait to get back down. Go right around the floor and read all about building the tower and the ingenious old elevator service to the top. Now to the river and take a 1hour sightseeing trip, the boats Bateaux Parisiens go from in front of the tower grounds. Buy a water for each person and wear a sun hat, it's hot. Commentary in languages inc. English and views of all of Paris, a must and the best way to view the city.

Short walk to get views of Hotel des Invalides, Metro Strasbourg St-Denis to half-way along Boulavard St Germain, walk to top of Boulevarde St Michelle, tea outside. Walk across to the Isle de la Cité, see inside Notre Dame. Buy triple ice-cream in back street on the island and diet when you get home!

If you want to see the Impressionists paintings they are on the top floor at Musee d'Orsay, a wonderful conversion of an old station on the south bank. Can be queues even in the afternoon.

Buy your gifts and mementos in the late afternoon to avoid carrying them all day.

I did all this in a day for clients, twice, a few years ago, and did it all again last year for my birthday, 1st May, though we ate at Julien in the evening.

I speak enough French to get by.

The Ibis Hotels provide modern accommodation in good locations, including near the Gare de L’Est at a moderate price. The Paris visit can be combined with the Normandy Invasion Beaches day, and also a visit to the mediaeval city of Rouen and wonderful drives in the surrounding forest.

Crossings can either be by ferry from Portsmouth to Le Havre, or through the Channel Tunnel from Folkestone to near Calais.
